National Union of Miners and Allied Workers
Our mission, history, and commitment to mine workers
The National Union of Mines and Allied Workers (NUMAW) was established in 2003 to address the critical need for organized representation in the mining industry. Our founders were miners who recognized that collective action was essential to improve safety standards, secure fair compensation, and protect workers' rights.
Today, NUMAW represents over 50,000 workers across various mining sectors including coal, gold, copper, and precious minerals. We operate in both large-scale industrial mines and smaller artisanal operations, ensuring all workers have a voice.
Our vision is a mining industry where every worker returns home safely each day, receives fair compensation for their labor, and works with dignity and respect.
